Maine to Georgia, CT,GA,MA,MD,ME,NC,NH,NJ,NY,PA,TN,VA,VT,WV - National Scenic Trail - In 1921, Benton MacKaye wrote an article for the Journal of the American Institute of Architects called "An Appalachian Trail: A Project in Regional Planning" (PDF). He advocated the creation of a new discipline called "regional planning." This 1921 project in "regional planning" proposed a trail that ran from the highest point in New England to the highest point in the South linking work camps and communities. He called it the Appalachian Trail.
